Stone is selected and laid so the finished wall reads as part of its locality: correct stone type, appropriate coursing, sensible size distribution, and quoins and features that follow local practice rather than a catalogue detail.

Bedding, throughs and mortar all affect how a stone wall performs in weather. Lime mortars are used where the building fabric needs to breathe, and pointing is finished to shed water rather than sit proud of the face.
