How SHS approaches it

Excavation depths are set against a fixed datum with a rotating laser rather than being estimated. Where an engineer has specified formation depths or bearing strata, the excavation is taken to that requirement and the formation left clean for inspection.

Safe working matters underground. Trench depth, soil type, groundwater and adjacent loads all determine whether battering back, stepping or support is required, and that assessment is made on site rather than assumed in advance.

- High water tables in valley-bottom and coastal sites mean open excavations often need pumping. Planning for that keeps concrete pours and drainage installations on schedule.
