Drainage Repairs & Blockage Solutions in Cumbria
Repairing collapsed, blocked or failed drainage — diagnosing the cause before excavating.
Recurring blockages are usually a symptom, not the problem. Collapsed clayware, displaced joints, root ingress, flat or reversed falls, crushed pipes under a new driveway, and chambers that have silted up all cause drains to keep failing however often they are cleared.
SHS carries out excavation-based drainage repairs on properties throughout Cumbria, replacing failed sections, rebuilding chambers and correcting falls so the system works rather than being cleared again in six months.
Applications
Where this work applies
- Older properties with original clayware drainage
- Drains crushed under new driveways or extensions
- Persistent blockages that keep returning
- Chambers that overflow in heavy rain
- Farm and rural systems of unknown layout
Project types
Typical projects
- Replacing a collapsed section of clay drain in a garden
- Rebuilding a failed inspection chamber
- Relaying a run with insufficient fall
- Rerouting a drain away from a tree causing root damage
Method
How SHS approaches it
01
The first job is to establish what is actually happening: where the run goes, where water backs up, and whether the fault is a blockage, a break or a design problem. CCTV survey is arranged where the layout is unclear, which is often cheaper than exploratory digging.
02
Repairs are made with materials compatible with the existing system and proper couplings, and the run is checked for flow before it is backfilled and the surface reinstated.

Cumbria
Local considerations
- Older Cumbrian properties frequently have drainage that has been altered repeatedly over a century or more, often with no records. Tracing runs and understanding where they discharge is a normal part of the work on these buildings.
- Intense rainfall events overwhelm undersized or partially blocked systems. A repair that also increases capacity or separates surface water from foul flow often solves a problem that clearing alone never will.
Frequently asked questions
SHS focuses on repairing the cause rather than routine jetting. Where a clearance or CCTV survey is needed first, that is arranged with a specialist so the repair is based on evidence.
