Drainage Contractor in Cumbria

Foul and surface water drainage installed to falls, tested and detailed for inspection.

Drainage decides whether a building stays dry and whether the ground around it stays usable. It covers foul drainage from the property, surface water from roofs and hard surfaces, and land drainage that manages water moving through the ground itself.

SHS installs new drainage, extends and alters existing systems, and resolves drainage problems on rural properties across Cumbria — including sites with no mains connection where a treatment plant or septic system is required.

Typical project range

£3,000 – £10,000

Typical drainage projects can include below-ground drainage, repairs, new runs, rural drainage and related groundworks.

Major drainage infrastructure, treatment systems or difficult rural sites can exceed this range.

Typical project ranges are indicative only and are intended to show the general scale of work SHS undertakes. Every project is different. Site access, ground conditions, engineering, materials, specification, drainage, programme and final scope can all materially affect cost. SHS will confirm pricing only after reviewing the project requirements.

Method

How SHS approaches it

  1. 01

Falls are set with a laser, not judged by eye. Too shallow and the run silts up; too steep and solids are left behind. Chambers are positioned so the system can actually be rodded and maintained in future.

  2. 02

Before designing a new system, SHS looks at where water is currently going. On rural properties the existing arrangement is often partly unknown, and tracing it saves installing a new system that discharges into the same problem.

Plant

Equipment used

  • 1.5 tonne excavator (company-owned)
  • 3 tonne track dumper
  • Hydraulic breaker pack
  • Rotating laser level
  • Plant and tipper trailers for self-delivery

Support

Professional input

  • Drainage design input from engineers on larger or consented schemes
  • Percolation testing coordination where soakaways or treatment plants are proposed

Specialist input is provided by independent professionals SHS works with, not by in-house departments.

Cumbria

Local considerations

  • High rainfall, clay soils and sloping ground mean surface water is a constant factor in Cumbria. Soakaways will not work everywhere, and percolation testing is often needed to prove whether infiltration is viable before a design is fixed.
  • Many rural Cumbrian properties are not connected to a mains sewer and rely on septic tanks or treatment plants discharging to a drainage field or watercourse. Those installations are subject to general binding rules and, in some cases, permitting — worth checking early in any project.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. SHS installs package treatment plants and septic systems with associated drainage fields, working to the manufacturer's installation requirements and the applicable discharge rules.
