Work starts with levels. A rotating laser is set up and datum points established before excavation begins, so formation depths, drainage falls and finished floor levels are all referenced back to the same fixed point rather than being judged by eye.

Ground conditions in Cumbria vary sharply over short distances — boulder clay, running sand, peat, made ground and rock can all appear on the same site. Where excavation reveals conditions that differ from what was assumed at pricing stage, SHS stops, records it and raises it with you and, where appropriate, a structural engineer, rather than quietly building on unsuitable formation.

- Rural Cumbrian sites frequently combine restricted access, long haul distances and ground that holds water. Access for concrete wagons, muck-away lorries and delivery vehicles often decides how a groundworks package is sequenced and priced, and it is one of the first things assessed at site visit stage.
- Exposure and rainfall also matter. Open excavations on fell-side and valley-bottom sites fill quickly, so dewatering, temporary drainage and sensible programming around weather windows are treated as part of the work rather than an afterthought.
