The build-up is chosen for the loading and the ground. A track used by loaded milk tankers is not built like a car driveway, and building both the same way wastes money on one and destroys the other.

Water is designed out from the start: falls across the surface, drainage at low points, and interception where water runs onto the track from surrounding land. This is what keeps a Cumbrian track intact through winter.

- Rural tracks in Cumbria carry heavy agricultural traffic in wet conditions across ground that is often peaty or poorly drained. Geotextiles and geogrids frequently pay for themselves by preventing stone from disappearing into soft formation.
- Accesses onto rural highways may need visibility splays and formal approval. Where a new or altered access is planned, that is worth establishing before construction is programmed.
Frequently asked questions
Compacted crushed stone is usually the most practical and repairable option, with concrete used where cleaning, slurry or intensive turning demands it. The choice depends on traffic and gradient.
