Rural groundworks is the same discipline as any other groundworks, carried out under harder conditions. Access is narrow, deliveries are difficult, ground is often soft or rocky, services are long and undocumented, and the weather has a bigger say in the programme.
SHS is set up for that: compact company-owned plant, self-delivery on our own trailers, and a working understanding of what farms, estates and rural households actually need from a contractor.

The access review comes first. Whether a concrete wagon, muck-away lorry or delivery vehicle can reach the working area determines the method and cost of everything else, and it is assessed honestly at the site visit rather than discovered on day one.

Working on someone's farm or in their yard means respecting how the place operates: gates closed, stock considered, routes kept clear and mess kept under control.

Local considerations
- Much of Cumbria is rural, and a large share of construction here happens at the end of a single-track lane. Compact tracked plant that can be self-delivered is often more useful than a bigger machine that cannot get to the work.
- Rainfall, exposure and altitude affect programmes. Realistic scheduling with weather contingency is more useful to a client than an optimistic date that slips.
