Concrete is unforgiving: mix, placement, compaction, level and curing all have to be right on the day, because there is no adjusting it afterwards. SHS carries out concrete works ranging from garden building bases through to floor slabs, agricultural aprons and reinforced structural elements.
The specification is chosen for the job — strength class, fibre or mesh reinforcement, sulfate resistance where ground conditions require it, and a surface finish suited to how the slab will actually be used.

Method
How SHS approaches it

Everything under the slab is checked before the pour: sub-base compaction, membrane laps and sealing, insulation, reinforcement cover and levels. Once the wagon arrives there is no time to correct it.

Weather is managed rather than ignored. Cold, wet and windy conditions all affect curing and finish, so pours are timed and protected accordingly — particularly on exposed Cumbrian sites.

Cumbria
Local considerations
- Access for a ready-mix wagon is the single biggest practical issue on rural concrete work. Narrow lanes, weight-restricted bridges, soft verges and long farm tracks may mean a pump, dumper-barrowing or smaller loads, and that has to be established before pricing.
- Agricultural concrete has to cope with slurry, silage effluent, machinery loads and cleaning. The mix and detailing for a farm slab are not the same as for a domestic garage floor.
Frequently asked questions
Usually, but it may require smaller loads, a pump, or transferring by dumper from a hardstanding point. Access is assessed at site visit stage and allowed for in the price.
