Structural Blockwork Contractor in Cumbria

Cavity walls, foundation blockwork and loadbearing internal walls built plumb, level and to specification.

Blockwork is the structural backbone of most modern buildings in the UK. It carries loads, forms the cavity that keeps weather out, provides fire and acoustic separation, and sets the accuracy that every trade after it depends on.

Masonry is where SHS started, and Sam Scott holds an NVQ Level 2 in Masonry (Blockwork). SHS carries out full blockwork packages for new builds, extensions, rural properties and developer projects across Cumbria.

Typical project range

£12,000 – £35,000

Project size, wall area, structural requirements, block specification, access, stonework and detailing influence the overall masonry package.

Large structural masonry or specialist stonework packages can exceed this range.

Typical project ranges are indicative only and are intended to show the general scale of work SHS undertakes. Every project is different. Site access, ground conditions, engineering, materials, specification, drainage, programme and final scope can all materially affect cost. SHS will confirm pricing only after reviewing the project requirements.

Method

How SHS approaches it

  1. 01

Accuracy compounds. Blockwork set out correctly at DPC keeps openings, floor levels and roof structure right all the way up; a shell built out of square costs somebody money on every trade afterwards.

  2. 02

Cavity detailing is checked as work proceeds — insulation fitted tight and continuous, ties at correct centres and falls, cavity trays and DPCs installed where they will actually shed water, and cavities kept clear of mortar droppings.

Plant

Equipment used

  • Mixers, cutting and lifting equipment
  • Telehandler operation (NPORS card held) where a machine is on site

Support

Professional input

  • Structural engineering for loadbearing design, padstones and reinforced masonry
  • Quantity surveying on measured masonry packages for developers and contractors

Specialist input is provided by independent professionals SHS works with, not by in-house departments.

Cumbria

Local considerations

  • Exposure ratings matter here. Much of Cumbria sits in a severe or very severe wind-driven rain category, which affects cavity width, insulation choice, mortar and detailing if the wall is going to stay dry.
  • Winter working needs managing: mortar protection, frost precautions and sensible programming keep masonry sound rather than compromised.
