Machine control uses positioning technology to guide an excavator or dozer bucket against a digital model of the finished ground. On larger earthworks it reduces over-dig, cuts the amount of material moved and imported, and removes much of the manual checking between passes.

The first question is whether it is worth it. On a small extension footing it is not; on a substantial platform or a long access road with significant volumes it can pay for itself in reduced material movement. SHS gives an honest view rather than selling technology for its own sake.

Where machine control is used, the survey model, the design intent and the site datum have to agree. That coordination is handled with the surveyor and designer before plant arrives on site.
