GPS Surveying & Setting Out for Cumbrian Projects

Accurate site setting out, with survey-grade GPS work arranged through specialist surveying partners.

Setting out determines whether a building ends up where the drawings say it should, at the right level, square and within the site boundary. Errors here are expensive because they are discovered late.

SHS carries out day-to-day setting out and level control in-house using a rotating laser system and established datum points. Where a project needs survey-grade GPS — topographical surveys, coordinate setting out, volume calculations or as-built records — that is delivered through specialist surveying partners rather than claimed as an in-house service.

Applications

Where this work applies

  • New build plots requiring accurate positioning
  • Sloping sites where levels drive the design
  • Drainage systems with critical falls
  • Multi-plot and developer sites
  • Earthworks where volumes affect cost

Project types

Typical projects

  • Setting out and level control for a rural new build
  • Topographical survey coordination before design
  • Level control across a cut-and-fill platform
  • As-built level check on completed groundworks

Method

How SHS approaches it

  1. 01

Every level on a project is referenced back to one datum. That means finished floor level, drainage invert levels, external levels and formation depths all relate to each other rather than to separate assumptions.

  2. 02

Where accuracy requirements exceed what laser levels and traditional setting out can deliver economically, SHS says so and brings in a surveyor. Honesty about the limits of in-house capability is more useful to a client than overstating it.

Plant

Equipment used

  • Rotating laser system (company-owned)
  • Levelling and setting out equipment

Support

Professional input

  • Specialist surveying partners for GPS, topographical and as-built survey work
  • Structural engineering where survey data informs design

Specialist input is provided by independent professionals SHS works with, not by in-house departments.

Cumbria

Local considerations

  • Cumbrian sites are rarely flat. Accurate level information is often the difference between a workable design and one that generates thousands of pounds of unplanned earthworks and retaining structure.
  • Tree cover, valley sides and remote locations can affect GNSS signal quality, which is one reason survey work on some sites is best handled by specialists with the right equipment and methods.

Frequently asked questions
